हम जानते हैं कि हजारों साल पहले के प्राणियों और आज के प्राणियों में कई अंतर पाए जाते हैं पहले सभी प्राणी अपने अपने ढंग से जमीन या पानी पर रहते थे जिसको जो भोजन मिला वह खा लिया जैसे तैसे एक दूसरे से रक्षा कर के जिंदा रहते थे पर धीरे-धीरे यह बातें बदलने लगी बदलते बदलते कुछ प्राणी मांसाहारी शिकारी जानवर और कुछ शाकाहारी पालतू जानवर बन गए इन्हीं मांसाहारी शिकारी जानवरों में से कुत्ता भी एक है जो जीभ से पानी को मुंह में उछाल कर पीता है इसका कारण यह है कि ऐसे जानवरों के जबड़े चौड़े होंठ पतले होते हैं इसी कारण दांत का उपयोग पकड़ने और चबाने  में आसानी से हो जाता है हम लोग होठों की मदद से बोलने पीने आदि का काम करते हैं हमारे होंठ मोटे और इतने बड़े होते हैं कि हम उन्हें मोड़कर नली जैसा बना लेते हैं इसी नली जैसी स्थिति में हम पानी को अंदर खींच पाते हैं अतः जिन जानवरों के होंठ पतले और जबड़े चौड़े होते हैं वह हमारी तरह होठों की मदद से पानी नहीं पी सकते इसलिए मांसाहारी शिकारी जानवर जीभ से पानी को मुंह से उछाल कर पीते हैं
